The Bar~Guide

Barrier Spells are a set of spells restricted to the White Mage and Red Mage job classes that can be used to increase your resistance to a certain element and/or status effect. Using these spells can greatly reduce the damage afflicted by a monster’s attack through certain special attacks and spells. With a bar~spell in effect your resistance increases, hence also increasing the chance of evading the attack altogether.

What are the bar~spells?

The spells can be put in two categories

  • Elemental Barrier ~ Increases resistance to a certain element
  • Status Effect Barrier ~ Increases resistance to a certain status effect

How do the bar~spells work? The degree of resistance, or power if you prefer that term, is based on the casters enhancing magic skill. The equation is:

Resistance Power = 50 + (Enhancing Magic Skill / 5)
It’s very important to keep your enhancing skill as high as you can.

The barrier spells can be stacked, but only one of each type at a time. That means you can mix one Elemental Barrier and one Status Effect Barrier, but not two of same.

Since a monsters debuffing spells and abilities are based on elements, one can use Barrier Spells to increase your resistance. Evasion is Wind based, so the Evasion Down special attack afflicted by the Single Bat type monsters must be Ice based, so you can use Barblizzara to increase your resistance against that particular element. The same can be done for other debuffs as well.

The Barrier Spells also helps you evade certain types of decrimental status effects.

  • Baraera – Raises Evasion against Choke and Silence
  • Barblizzara – Raises Evasion against Bind, Frost and Paralysis
  • Barfira – Raises Evasion against Burn and Virus
  • Barstonra – Raises Evasion against Petrification and Rasp
  • Barthundra – Raises Evasion against Shock and Stun
  • Barwatera – Raises Evasion against Drown and Poison

But it doesn’t stop there. You can increase your resistance against Status Down effects as well.

  • STR Down – Barwatera
  • INT Down – Barfira
  • VIT Down – Baraera
  • MND Down – Barthundra
  • DEX Down – Barstonra
  • AGI Down – Barblizzara
